Monitoring

Major challenges for behaviour analysis tools today

Manual inspection is a lot of work

Inspection takes time and gives a limited view.

Huge number of individuals

Cages typically have 100 000 to 250 000 fish in them, making it impossible to monitor the whole population by traditional means.

Limited information from cameras

Cage coverage using cameras alone is very small. Fish naturally migrate up and down in the water column, meaning it is hard to get a representative measurement without covering a larger volume. Periods of poor visibility, low light or darkness increase the challenge.

Many behavior patterns are impossible to detect

Fish density, movement, and distribution are impossible to detect with cameras.

Solution

Hydroacoustics measure fish behaviour

Echosounders can map the position of every fish in a huge volume of water, every few seconds, using sonar. These data in series show the behaviour of the fish population, with machine learning algorithms providing much more information about the welfare of your fish.

  • Behavioural patterns are immediately visible

  • Machine learning models detect deviations from normal behaviour patterns.

  • Can give early warning of diseases and other events.

Echograms show you the fish position over time.

Echosounders measures where the fish are by emitting sound and listening for the echo. Echograms show you where the fish is now and where it has been.

  • Independent of light

  • Large volume

  • Can track large groups of fish

Simple to use – deep insight to uncover

See the distribution of fish and their movement over time,

  • Easy to use dashboard, customisable to your needs

  • Easy to compare feeding response over time

  • Offer unique insights

Follow the health and welfare of all your fish in real time

Welfare shield is an add on to Discovery, and is in developement now.

Challenges with monitoring welfare today

Manual monitoring is a lot of work

Sampling and inspection takes a lot of time and also stresses the fish.

Many invisible welfare issues

Diseases and stress are close to impossible to detect with cameras.

Examples

Detection of Pancreas Disease over a month earlier

In a research paper, Håkon Måløy at NTNU describes how he was able to detect Pancreas Disease in echosounder data.

  • “…detecting disease indicators over a month prior to detection using standard procedures.”
  • “… high potential for automatic behavior detection through unintrusive methods”

monitor stressors affecting your fish

In order to detect behavioral anomalies we must know what “normal” looks like. Bluegrove has built a database of over 30000 cage days of salmon behavior. With Welfare Shield:

  • You can see the fish reacting to stressful event in real time.
  • High stress events also remain visible on historical graphs

Assess if your fish have recovered from delicing

See the difference after delicing. For example:

  • Prior to delicing, fish were staying deep during the day when not eating.
  • After delicing many fish chose to stay near the surface all day, while others behaved more normally, suggesting some are slower to recover than others.

Case study

A farm in Norway sees fish behaviour changes; first due to tuna in the cage, and later after delicing.

Analysis based on fish positioning data over a 3 month period. The graph shows the deviation in day time swimming depth relative to the mean for the past month. A value close to zero, means little deviation, while a negative value (higher on y axis) indicates that the fish are swimming closer to the surface than usual. Likewise, negative values mean the fish are swimming deeper than they have been previously.<!small>

Detect predators or other specific events

Predator
Abnormal behavior was visible 3 days before site personnel finally found a bluefin tuna in one of the cages.

Delicing
The fish completely altered behaviour after a delicing operation. The data suggests the fish took close to 14 days to fully recover.
